Preparing the Spicy Sauce
You could say the spicy sauce is the hero of this dish. The sauce is what gives the beef its amazing flavor, all through the caramelisation of the sugar. Begin by whisking together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, sriracha sauce, and brown sugar in a small bowl until well combined. Set this concoction aside, and continue with the rest of the preparations.
Cooking the Spicy Beef
Start by heating a generous drizzle of olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is shimmering, add the beef mince, using the back of a spoon to break it up. Allow the beef to brown, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking. Next, add the minced garlic to the pan, allowing it to infuse the meat with its aromatic essence.
Once the beef is cooked through and the garlic is fragrant, it’s time to introduce the spicy sauce to the mix. Pour the prepared spicy sauce mixture into the pan with the cooked beef. Stir well to coat the beef evenly. Cook for about 5 minutes until the liquid has reduced. With the liquid cooked out, continue cooking the mixture for another minute or two, which will start to caramelise the sugars in the sauce.
It’s tempting to want to stop the cooking process too soon. However, by allowing the sugar time to caramelise, we end up with an incredible flavor as the final result. Don’t be afraid to cook the beef for longer than you think you normally would.
Finish by adding a splash of water to the pan, this will add a layer of sauciness to the mixture and will help keep the beef moist.
Serving the Spicy Beef
In a separate frying pan, melt a knob of butter over medium heat. Once the butter is sizzling, add the spinach leaves, allowing them to wilt and release their vibrant green hue. You only need to cook the spinach for a minute or so, they will continue to cook once removed from the heat. Season the spinach with a pinch of salt and pepper.
With all our components cooked to perfection, it’s time to assemble the Spicy Beef Bowls. Begin by dividing the cooked rice among four bowls. Top each mound of rice with a generous portion of the spicy beef, allowing its savory aroma to tantalize the senses. Arrange the sautéed spinach, julienned carrots, and thinly sliced cucumber around the beef, creating a vibrant tapestry of colors and textures.
Drizzle extra sriracha sauce over the bowls for an added kick. Sprinkle sesame seeds generously over the top of each bowl to enhance both flavor and presentation.
