Apple crumble is a timeless classic that brings comfort and warmth to any table. This oaty apple crumble recipe elevates the traditional dessert by adding a deliciously crunchy oat topping to complement the tender, spiced apple filling. Perfect for cozy evenings, family gatherings, or a sweet treat any day of the week, this recipe is easy to follow and results in a dessert that’s sure to impress. With the combination of tart Granny Smith apples, warm spices, and a buttery oat topping, every bite is a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. Let’s dive into the steps to create this delightful dessert!
Preparing the Apple Filling
Begin your journey to the perfect oaty apple crumble by preheating your oven to 180°C (350°F). While the oven warms up, grab your apples—Granny Smiths work beautifully due to their tartness and firm texture. Peel and slice 1 kilogram of these apples and place them into a large mixing bowl. To enhance the apples’ natural flavors, add 1 tablespoon of flour, 50 grams of white sugar, 50 grams of brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon of nutmeg.
Toss the mixture thoroughly to ensure each apple slice is evenly coated with the sweet, tangy, and spiced goodness. Once combined, spread the apple mixture evenly in a 1.5-liter baking dish, ready to add the crumble topping.
Crafting the Oat Crumble Topping
Next, it’s time to create the star of this dessert: the oaty crumble topping. In a medium-sized bowl, combine 90 grams of rolled oats, 150 grams of flour, 75 grams of white sugar, 100 grams of brown sugar, 140 grams of melted butter, ½ teaspoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Mix these ingredients together until they form a coarse, crumbly texture.
Once mixed, use your fingers to spread the crumble mixture evenly over the apples in the baking dish, ensuring that all the fruit is well-covered.
Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping turns golden brown.
Once cooked, cover the crumble with foil and leave to rest for 10 minutes. This resting period allows the juices from the apples to thicken and the flavors to meld together, ensuring each bite is perfectly balanced and richly satisfying.
Serving the Apple Crumble
When it comes to serving your oaty apple crumble, the key is to enjoy it warm, straight from the oven. The contrast between the tender, spiced apples and the crunchy oat topping is best experienced while the crumble is still fresh.
For an extra touch of indulgence, pair each serving with a generous scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream or a rich drizzle of warm custard. The cool, smooth ice cream melting over the hot crumble creates a delightful blend of textures and flavors that will make every bite irresistible. Whether you’re sharing it with family or savoring it solo, this dessert is sure to be a hit.
